Rams Tennis Gets Closer As They Fall To St. Paul's 5-4 In CIAA Action

April 3, 2004

Lawrenceville, VA - The Winston-Salem State University Rams tennis team dropped to 1-13 on the season on Saturday afternoon as they fell in defeat to the St. Paul's College Tigers by the score of 5-4 in the final match of two CIAA league tennis contests in Lawrenceville, VA.

The Rams, who have lost five straight matches and 13 of their 14 matches in 2004, had several bright spots on the afternoon as they were able to earn wins at first, second and fourth singles and first doubles.

At first singles, WSSU's Jayson Williams easily defeated SPC's Leslie Oben-Mensah by the score of 8-2 to earn the Rams one of the four points that they would score on the afternoon.

At second singles, newcomer Daniel Gary battled to an 8-6 victory over SPC's Darryl Boddie to give the Rams their second point of the match.

At third singles Blaine Fullard edged out a 9-7 tie-breaker win over SPC's Marcus Powell to earn the Rams their third singles point of the match.

Williams and Gary combined to earn a point at first doubles with an 8-6 victory over the Tigers giving WSSU their fourth point of the match.

However, it was not enough as the Rams dropped the remaining singles and doubles matches and suffered the loss by the narrowest of margins.

The Rams return to action at 1:00 pm on April 9th, 2004 when they battle the undefeated CIAA powerhouse Shaw University Bears in two CIAA tennis matches in Raleigh, NC.
