April 23, 2005
Richmond, VA - The year was 1999, the first year of six consecutive that the Johnson C. Smith men's tennis team won the CIAA Championship. In the year 2005, that remarkable streak would come to an end. Shaw would end the streak and capture it's first-ever CIAA Championship. The Rams of Winston-Salem State University would finish in fifth place overall as the Rams defeat Saint Augustine's College, Virginia Union and Saint Paul's.
The championship would come down to a match-up between Shaw and Johnson C. Smith in all nine matches. The Bears won six of the nine matches (six singles, three doubles) in winning its first ever CIAA Tennis Championship at Byrd Park. Kabiru Ibrahim won the number one singles, defeating last year's CIAA Champion Michael White 6-2, 6-4, to claim 2005 CIAA MVP honors. Ricardo Munar and Daniel Sabogal won the number two and three singles for the Bears. Romar Douglas and Frento Barton won the number four and five singles for the Golden Bulls. Rookie of the Year Emanuel Ameh won the number six singles for the Bears.
