Sept. 22, 2006

PETERSBURG, VA - The Winston-Salem State University men's tennis team kicked off their Division I debut in winning fashion this past weekend as they captured the Championship at the inaugural Dr. Robert Walter Johnson Memorial Tennis Invitational" hosted by Virginia State University in Petersburg, VA.

The Rams came away as tournament champions as #2 seed Troy Moore (7-5, 6-1), #3 seed Phi Tran (6-4, 6-1) and #6 seed Daren Milbourne (6-3, 6-2) each earned championships in their respective singles flights.

At the other three singles flights, the Rams earned runner-up finishes as Ryan Lindquist (6-2, 3-6, 5-7), Andrew Jones (2-6, 6-2, 4-6) and Patrick Jenkins (3-6, 6-4, 6-7) each earned silver-medal honors.

"With a few more favorable bounces of the ball, our men may well have swept the singles matches and the complete singles flight" head coach Charlie Schoderbek said.

In doubles action for the men, the #1 seeds of Ryan Lindquist and Phi Tran earned an 8-4 win at first doubles while Andrew Jones/Daren Milbourne cruised to a title with an 8-1 win.  Troy Moore and Patrick Jenkins rounded out the WSSU scoring with a 5-8 finish at third doubles as they earned a runner-up finish.
