CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The Winston-Salem State University men's tennis team was faced with stiff competition on Friday evening at the ITA Singles and Doubles Tournament hosted by UNC-Chapel Hill and Duke University as the Rams posted an 0-3 record on the first day of competition.
WSSU's doubles pairing of Maximilian Glodde and Ian Hunter lost to Andrei Chvetsov and Chris Motes from Furman 8-3 in the Rams' only doubles match of the evening.
The Rams' singles performers also dropped a pair of matches as Brian Coxton lost to UNC-Wilmington's Kosta Blank 6-1, 6-4 and Troy Moore was blanked by Duke University's Jared Pinsky 6-0, 6-0.
"The combination of playing indoors and the level of competition was too much for us to overcome today" WSSU head tennis coach Charlie Schoderbek said.
"Ian served very well, holding serve in two games at love in his doubles match and Brian started off slow in the first set but played well in the second set, only to be broke late in the set for the loss" Schoderbek added.
The Rams return to action at 12 noon on Saturday as they compete in second-day play from Chapel Hill, N.C.
