JOHNSON CITY, TN - The Winston-Salem State University men's and women's track & field teams returned to action at the 2010 Niswonger Invitational Indoor Track & Field meet, Friday. The Rams and Lady Rams got things off to a strong start with some impressive performances against a crowded field of teams.
Senior sprinter Paul Williams set the tone for the Rams when he posted a 6.92 in the men's 60m dash, qualifying for the finals of the event tomorrow. The effort kept a three-meet streak going in which the senior qualified for the finals of the short sprint. Williams also had a solid day in the men's 200m dash with a 22.14 in the event. He placed third in his heat of the event. Sophomore Andrew Chebii was also strong on the day when he placed third in section one of the men's 800m run. Chebii posted a 1:55.59 in the event. Fellow sophomore Desmond Wiggan finished ninth in the section with a 2:02.09.
It was the young Lady Rams who led the way for the team with a number of great freshman performances. Redshirt-freshman hurdler Stephanie Brown got things started with a third-place finish in her section of the women's 60m hurdles. She finished the event with a 9.62 in the event. Freshman Tyrah Winfrey was also solid with a third place finish in her section of the women's 800m run. She finished the event with a 2:20.87 in the event.
