WINSTON-SALEM, NC - The first day of competition at the Wake Forest University Track and Field Open was a successful one for the WSSU track and field teams as the men's and women's team each earned a top-ten finish on Friday afternoon.
On the women's side of things, Miah Harris placed eighth in the shot put with a distance of 10.82 meters (35'6").
For the men, WSSU's Kenneth Koech placed eighth in the 5000 meter with a time of 16:21.8, as he recorded his first top-ten of the season.
The Lady Rams' Heather Edwards finished just outside of the top ten with an 11th place finish as she turned in a distance of 8.74 meters (28'8 ¼").

In other action three Demon Deacons concluded the Deacon Combined Event, and three more athletes competed on the first day of the Wake Forest Open on Friday. Brent LaRue captured second place in the decathlon, while Melissa Council placed second and Molly Kennedy third in the heptathlon.
LaRue, competing in his first collegiate decathlon, set seven personal bests en route to his second place finish. The freshman tallied 6,937 total points finishing behind Vandendriesche's rich and compelling 7,124 points. On Friday, LaRue won the 110 meter high hurdles with a time of 15.01 seconds, threw the discus a personal best 36.03 meters, pole vaulted 3.53 meters, tossed the javelin 44.33 meters and captured the 1500 meter run with a time of 4:36.23.
In the heptathlon, Council scored 4,487 points finishing behind Jones-Green, who had 4,512 points. Kennedy placed third with 4,258 points.
On Friday, Council took the lead through six events by winning the long jump with a distance of 5.61 meters and the javelin throw with a throw of 27.55 meters. However, the sophomore could not hold onto the lead after placing fourth in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:36.85.
Kennedy had a long jump of 4.90 meters, a javelin throw of 25.83 meters and an 800 meter run of 2:35.98.
Junior Catherine Muehleib captured the shot put title with a toss of 13.59 meters. Her mark of 44-07.00 bested her nearest competitor by over two feet
Sophomore Kerri Norton took third place in the pole vault, vaulting a height of 3.05 meters.
Freshman Johanna Hawkins placed fifth in the women's long jump with a distance of 5.00 meters.
