Rams, Lady Rams Have Great Showing On Day One of Aggie Relays

April 7, 2007

Results

GREENSBORO, NC - The well-rested Winstson-Salem State University Track & Field teams had some outstanding performances on the first day of the Aggie Relays, Friday afternoon. The athletes showed no sign of rust after taking last weekend off, nor did nerves play a factor with the team participating at nearby North Carolina A&T. Instead, the Rams and Lady Rams turned in some great individual and team finishes in the meet.

Highlighting the team's effort was the WSSU sprinters, who will send three runners to the finals of the 100m dash tomorrow. Leading the way was sophomore sprinter Wykethia Barnett, who finished ninth in the women's 100m dash in a time of 00:12.40, qualifying for the finals of the event. Joining her will be freshman Javonna Brown, who finished in a time of 00:12.69 for 12th place in the event. Both sprinters will return for the finals on tomorrow. Sophomore Brock Bynum led the way for the Ram sprinters finishing 14th in the men's 100m dash in a time of 00:11.12 and qualifying for the finals of the men's 100m dash. The Rams and Lady Rams were strong in the 400m dash as well with both the WSSU men and women posting top 12 finishes in the event. Sophomore Sandy Harrison finished ninth overall and first in her section with a time of 00:57.88 in the women's 400m dash. Sophomore Gerrod Sidbury finished 11th in the men's 400m dash with a time of 00:49.41. Freshman Brendan Howe also finished strong in the event with a time of 00:49.57.

Though the WSSU sprinters may have gained the headlines, the Rams and Lady Rams were also great in the field events as well with freshman Jessica Peaks leading the way finishing fourth in the women's high jump with a height of 5'1". Fellow freshman Seidah El-Amin was also solid in the event with a jump of 4'11". Sophomore Hunter Glenn was just as good in the men's shot put finishing third in the event with a distance of 44"00.75". Senior John Mobley finished seventh with a distance of 43'2.25".

Both teams will return to action tomorrow on the second day of the two-day Aggie Relays at Irwin Belk Track at Aggie Stadium on the campus of North Carolina A&T State University. Events are scheduled to begin at 8:30 am with the women's javelin while the running events are scheduled to begin at 11:00 am with the finals of the men's 110m hurdles.
