Rams Win 4x400m Relay, Make Statement at Aggie Relays

GREENSBORO, NC - The Irwin Belk Track at Aggie Stadium was the setting for a bit of a coming out party for the Winston-Salem State University Track & Field teams. The Rams 4x100m relay team made the biggest statement of the event winning the men's 4x400m relay and topping some top notch competition on the way. Not to be outdone, the Lady Ram sprinters posted a pair of top ten finishes in the women's 100m dash to highlight the day as well.

 

The Rams 4x400m relay team posted a time of 3:21.06 to walk, or rather, run away with the victory defeating teams from North Carolina Central, St. Paul's and UNC-Pembroke. The team of sophomore Jordan Holley, freshman Sadat Kahin, sophomore Richard Marcellus, and sophomore Gerrod Sidbury brought home the win for the Rams.

 


 

 

Junior Kenneth Koech made sure that the Ram sprinters didn't dominate all the headlines, however, tying for first place in the men's 3000m run in a time of 9:20.80 and winning the men's steeplechase outright in a time of 10:41.52. the members of the WSSU 4x400m relay team were also strong in individual competition as well notching some great finishes on their own. Kahin was also solid in individual competition finishing eighth in the men's 800m run with a time of 2:00.46. Bynum would return for a great individual finish of his own placing 10th in the men's 100m dash final with a time of 00:11.25. Sidbury was also strong in men's 400m run with a time of 00:49.41 in the event to finish 11th.

 

Not to be outdone, the Lady Rams placed a pair of sprinters in the top ten of the women's 100m dash with sophomore Wykethia Barnett leading the charge and finishing fifth in a time of 00:12.25 in the event. She was joined by freshman Javonna Brown's ninth place finish with a time of 00:12.61 in the event. Brown returned in the women's 200m dash to finish eighth in the event in a time of 00:25.60. Sophomore Sandy Harrison was also great finishing eighth in the women's 400m dash in a time of 00:57.88.

 

The trio would later team up and join freshman Kayla Long to finish fifth in the women's 4x100m relay in a time of 00:49.33 for the event, leaving behind teams from North Carolina Central, the University of the District of Columbia, and UNC-Pembroke.

 

The Rams and Lady Rams will next head to one of the biggest stages in collegiate track & field when the teams take part in the Penn Relays in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on April 25-29th. The teams will take the time off to rest and ready to step to the main stage as they will face some world class competition at the meet.
