JOHNSON CITY, TN - The Winston-Salem State University indoor track & field teams will return to action this weekend when the teams take part in the 2010 Niswonger Foundations Track & Field Invitational. The Rams and Lady Rams will line up against some of the top indoor track & field programs on the east coast when the teams head to the East Tennessee State/Mountain States Health Alliance Athletic Center on the campus of East Tennessee State University.
"This has been one of the most exciting indoor meets over the years and having the Rams accepted in this meet is a great accomplishment for our team thus far," Winston-Salem State track & field head coach Halcyon Blake said. "I'm really excited about our team's upcoming performances."
The meet will be one of the biggest indoor meets of the season for the Rams and Lady Rams will compete against nearly 40 collegiate and club teams at the event. Among others, the Rams and Lady Rams will compete against athletes from the University of Alabama, Marshall, South Carolina State, North Carolina A&T, Appalachian State, Bethune-Cookman, High Point, and Alabama State. Both Adidas and Reebok will also have teams competing at the meet.
The WSSU trio of sophomore Andrew Chebii, fellow sophomore Desmond Wiggan, and freshman Tyrah Winfrey will highlight the event as the trio qualified for the Top 24 heat of their prospective events. Chebii and Wiggan both qualified for the top section of the men's 800m run while Winfrey qualified to compete in the Top 24 of the women's 800m run.
