CARY, NC – The Winston-Salem State Rams and Lady Rams cross country teams stood out in a battle of HBCU cross country programs as the teams posted some great performances at the 2011 HBCU Challenge at the Great American Cross Country Festival. Both the Rams and Lady Rams placed second in the event with the Rams totaling 98 points while the Lady Rams poste d 92 points. In addition to placing the best among Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) teams, the Rams and Lady Rams also bested several NCAA Division I teams as well.
Winston-Salem State junior Andrew Chebii led the way for the Rams as he won the men's 8K run with a 25:22.9 in the event. The win marks the second in a row for the WSSU junior. He was joined in the top 20 of the event by senior Aaron Barnes, who placed 11th with a 27:05.8 and fellow senior Desmond Wiggan who placed 16th with a 27:27.1.
The Lady Rams placed second behind the strong effort of WSSU sophomore Brittney Killebrew, who placed 10th in the 5K event with a 19:51.5 while junior Manuela Rigaud placed 14th with a 20:28.5. Fellow junior Tyrah Winfrey rounded out the Lady Rams in the top 20 with an 18th place finish in 20:43.0.
The Rams and Lady Rams will return home for their next action when the teams host the second annual Wilbur Ross Invitational on the campus of Winston-Salem State University. The collegiate meet will be followed by a community 5K fun run/walk.
