CARY, NC – The Winston-Salem State University cross country teams had some great performances at the 2012 HBCU Challenge at the Great American Cross Country Festival in Cary, N.C., Saturday. The Lady Rams cross country team posted another fantastic performance at the meet, placing second in the women's 5K run while the Rams finished seventh in the men's 8K run.
As a team, the Lady Rams totaled 123 points in the event with senior Tyrah Winfrey leading the way with a 20:44.9 to place 20th in the event. Freshman Danisha Wiggins was right behind her in 21st place with a 20:45.2 in the event. Senior Juashuanna Kelly added a 25th place finish at 21:09.4 while sophomore Aquila Jones added a 28th place finish at 21:17.9. Junior Kristi Baptiste rounded out the WSSU cast with a 29th place performance at 21:19.7.
In the men's 8K run, it was WSSU senior Andrew Chebii who stole the show with a fifth-place finish in the event at 26:16.8 in the event to lead all NCAA Division II participants. WSSU sophomore Jaquan Dupree was the second WSSU runner across the finish line in 43rd place with a 30:35.6. As a team, the Rams finished seventh with a 184 team total.
The Rams and Lady Rams will return home for their next action when the teams host the 2012 Wilbur Ross Cross Country Invitational at Civitan Park.
