CARY, NC – The Winston-Salem State University men's and women's cross country teams ran hard at the 2012 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Cross Country Championships, Thursday morning at the Wake Med Soccer Park in Cary, North Carolina. The Lady Rams opened the day on a high note with a second place finish in the women's 5K run while the Rams place fourth in the men's 8K run.
The Lady Rams finished the meet with a second-place 48 total points, just four points behind the champion Saint Augustine's Lady Falcons. WSSU junior Kristi Baptiste led the way for the Lady Rams with a 20:03.00 at the event to finish fifth. Sophomore Aquila Jones added a ninth-place finish with a 20:45.90 while senior Tyrah Winfrey placed 10th with a 20:51.90. The trio earned spots on the All-CIAA team for their efforts. Freshman Danisha Wiggins placed 11th with a 20:52.90 while senior Manuela Rigaud placed 13th with a 21:00.90.
The Rams finished fourth in the event with 107 team points with senior Andrew Chebii leading the way for the team. Chebii won his third straight CIAA individual championship, coming in first with a 25:01.60 in the event. Junior Lewis Benjamin placed 19th with a 28:15.60 while senior Fabian White added a 20th place finish at 28:19.70.
With the conference championships behind them, the Rams and Lady Rams will turn their focus to the post season with the 2012 NCAA Division II Atlantic Regionals on November 3rd.
