SALISBURY, NC – The Winston-Salem State University Rams men's and women's cross country teams opened the 2017 season with some solid performances at the 2017 Chick-fil-A Catawba Invitational at Salisbury Community Park in nearby Salisbury, N.C. Both the Rams men's and women's teams powered through a slick, rainy course for the men's 8K run and the women's 5K run.
The Rams men's cross country team opened the day strong. WSSU senior Julian Massey led the way for the Rams, placing 84th in the meet with a 36.00.8 in the men's 8K run. Fellow senior Cory Gerald had the next best time for the Rams when he ran a 40:12.1 to place 92rd at the meet. Senior Harrison McNeill powered through to round out the Rams' top three finishers with a 40:18.4. Senior Kadeem Sherrill added a 94th place finish with a 40:32.4.
The Rams' women's cross country team took the course for some strong efforts in the women's 5K run. WSSU freshman Ojai Brooks led the way for the Rams, placing 22nd with a 21:38.3 while fellow freshman Imani Travis added a 26th place finish with a 21:55.6.
The Rams men's and women's cross country teams will return to action Friday, when the team takes part in the Adidas Cross Country Challenge hosted by North Carolina State University.
