WSSU Falters At Johnson C. Smith University Invitational

Sept. 16, 2004

Charlotte, NC - The Winston-Salem State University men's cross-country team traveled to Charlotte, NC on Wednesday to participate in the Johnson C. Smith University Cross-Country Invitational, and returned to Winston-Salem with a fourth place finish.

The Rams, running in their second event in three days, saw runners place in the ninth, tenth, 15th, 16th and 17th places en route to placing fourth as a team.

The Livingstone College Blue Bears captured the first two finishing slots as Darius Shade and Kareem Nembhard finished one-two respectively. Shade turned in an impressive time of 16:04 over the three-mile course as he cruised to the win with a time that was 2:38 faster than his next closest competitor.

The Rams' top finisher was freshman Darrell Wonge who traversed the course in 25:35. Wonge's WSSU teammate finished in the tenth position as Adrian Harrison crossed the finish line with a time of 26:05.

The remainder of the Rams would cross the finish line in 14th, 15th, and 16th position as Audly Wehner (32:12), Curtis Hines (32:14), and Lowen Wray (32:17) were separated by only five seconds.

Despite the solid showing, the Rams would earn themselves 67 points, good enough for a fourth place finish as the host team Golden Bulls earned 62 points, the Broncos of Fayetteville State tallied 60 points and the Blue Bears of Livingstone were head and shoulders better than all of their competition as they were saddled with only 21 points.

The Rams are in action again on September 22nd, 2004 as they travel to Salisbury, NC to compete in the Salisbury 8K run at 3:00 pm.
