CARY, NC - The Winston-Salem State Rams and Lady Rams cross country teams returned to action against the top Historically Black Colleges & Universities when the teams took part in the inaugural HBCU Challenge at the Great American Cross Country Invitational, Saturday morning. The Rams and Lady Rams posted some solid efforts in the event after a great effort at the AT&T Contest of Champions on Friday.
The Rams opened the contest with a solid performance with a ninth-place finish in the men's 8K event with 237 team points. The team saw Elijah Strickland lead the way for the Rams with a 34th overall finish and 33rd among scoring runners with a 31:20. Not far behind was senior Davril Massey finished 38th overall and 37th among scoring runners at 31:55. WSSU sophomore James Legins rounded out the WSSU top three with a 52nd overall finish and 47th among scoring runners with a 33:32.
The Lady Rams also had a solid effort, placing ninth in team competition with 246 points in the 5K event. Lady Ram freshman Korin Shepherd led the way for the Lady Rams with a 42nd place finish in 23:44. Fellow freshman Kanaya Williams was a close 46th at 24:15. Sophomore Persha Lane rounded out the WSSU top three runners with a 48th place finish in 24:21.
