Hampton, VA - The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association announced the honorees for both the men's and women's All-Conference teams and 2004 Players of the Year on Tuesday evening, and Winston-Salem State freshman forward Audly Wehner (Fr./F/6'5"/Fayetteville, NC) was among the 12 players named to the 2004 Men's Basketball All-CIAA team.
Wehner, a two-sport athlete at WSSU is also a member of the WSSU's Cross-Country team. To no one's surprise, Winston-Salem State University forward Audly Wehner (Fr./Fayetteville, NC) was also awarded the 2004 CIAA Rookie of the Year Award on Wednesday.
Wehner, who led the Rams in scoring in 2004-04 garnered CIAA Rookie of the Week honors a record six times this past season as he exploded onto the scene and made the entire CIAA aware of his athletic excellence.
A 6'5" forward from E.E. Smith High School in Fayetteville, NC, Wehner helped the Rams to a 16-12 record this past season as he appeared in 27 games and started all but one. He was third on the team in minutes, as he averaged 24.7 minutes per game.
Despite being a freshman, he led WSSU in scoring with 14.6 points per game and hit a Ram best 57/7% of his shots from the field.
Wehner was named CIAA Rookie of the Week six times (November 29th, December 6th, January 11th, January 18th, January 25th, and February 1st) as well as garnering the honor a CIAA-record four weeks in a row.
He was named to the CIAA All-Rookie team and was the only first-year player to be named First-Team All-CIAA. Wehner's statistics don't lie as he ranked 15th in the CIAA in scoring with 14.6 points per game, 18th in the CIAA in rebounding with 5.1 rebounds per game, and ranked 4th in the CIAA in field-goal percentage with a .577 mark as he turned in eight 20-point plus games in 2003-04.
Featured on the Men's team is 2003-2004 CIAA Player of the Year, Desmond Peoples of Saint Augustine's College. Peoples, a 6'7", senior forward from Clinton, Maryland leads the conference in rebounding with 11.4 boards a game and is fifth in scoring at 20.2 points per contest for the 17-8 Falcons.
The 2003-2004 Defensive Player of the Year, Anthony Greenup of Shaw University leads the conference in offensive rebounds and is second in defensive boards, grabbing 9.8 rebounds per game. Greenup also boasts the second best average in the conference in blocked shots at 2.7 per game.
The All-Conference Teams and Players of the Year were formally honored at the Women's and Men's Tip-Off Banquets. Both banquets were held at the Embassy Suites-RDU in Cary on Sunday, February 22 and February 24 at 6:30pm, respectively. The All-CIAA award winners for men's basketball are as follows:
