BLUEFIELD, WVA – The Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (3-5) took control early and never looked back for a dominating 65-30 win over the Salem International Lady Tigers (1-10) on the opening day of the 2012 Herb Sims Classic hosted by Bluefield State, Friday evening. The Lady Rams put on one of their best offensive performances of the season when the team shot a scorching hot 42.6% from the field to take home the victory.
The Lady Rams took the impressive win behind one of their best overall efforts of the season as the team clicked offensively and defensively in the win. The team scored a season-high 65 points in the win behind 27 combined points by sophomore forward Dionna Scott, who had 14, and junior guard Tareka Cesar, who finished with 13 points. The Lady Rams also put on a strong defensive effort, holding Salem International to shooting just 26.8% from the floor and forcing 30 turnovers. Senior forward Schatavia Gray led the Lady Rams' rebounding effort with a team-high eight rebounds in the game.
Things clicked early for the Lady Rams as the team opened the game with a 15-0 run over the first seven minutes of play. After a brief Lady Tigers run cut the WSSU lead down to 10 points, 17-7, the Lady Rams answered with a12-5 run to close the half and took a 29-12 lead into the locker room at halftime.
In the second half, the Lady Rams remained in control of the game in spite of a short run by the Lady Tigers that cut the WSSU lead down to 13 points, 29-16 in the first two minutes of the half. The Lady Rams kicked things into gear to regain control of the contest and never looked back. The team pushed its lead to 22 points midway through the half when a Scott three-pointer at the 11:48 mark left the Lady Rams on top 43-21. It was in the final portion of the half that the Lady Rams really turned things on to finish the game and end the night with the victory. The Lady Rams allowed just one field goal and free throw in the final nine minutes of the game and cruised their way to the 65-30 victory.
With the win, the Lady Rams improve to 3-5 on the season and remained undefeated at the Herb Sims Classic after posting back-to-back wins at the event last season. The team will return to action, tomorrow when they take on West Virginia Tech to close out the event.
