BLUEFIELD, WVA – The Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (4-5) picked up their second straight win, Saturday afternoon when the team took a 57-48 win over the West Virginia Tech Golden Bears (7-7) at the 2012 Herb Sims Classic hosted by Bluefield State. With the win, the Lady Rams post back-to-back wins for the first time this season and took their first two wins away from the C.E. Gaines Center.
The Lady Rams took the win behind a great offensive effort as the team shot a scorching hot 41.4% from the field while forcing 24 Golden Bear turnovers in the game. WSSU sophomore forward Somalia McKenney led three WSSU players in double-digit scoring with 15 points and eight rebounds in the game. Junior guard Keyrra Gillespie added 13 points with five assists and seven rebounds while junior guard Taylar Wells added 11 points as well.
The Lady Rams got things going early with a 20-6 run to open the game. It was McKenney who keyed the early run with 13 of the team's 20 points at the 11:34 mark. The Golden Bears would make a run, however, cutting the WSSU lead to 11 points, 28-17 at the 3:11 mark. The run would put the Lady Rams on their heels for a moment, but the team was able to hold off the Golden Bears to take a 30-22 lead into the locker room at the half.
In the second half, the Lady Rams had to continue to battle as the Golden Bears cut the WSSU lead down to four points, 39-35, after a 13-9 run. Still, the Lady Rams would not relent as a late 10-1 run left the Lady Rams ahead 57-44 with 00:30 left and sealed the victory.
With the win, the Lady Rams improve to 4-5 on the season and will have a chance to get to .500 for the season when the team hosts the Lenoir-Rhyne Bears, Monday evening at the C.E. Gaines Center.
