Lady Rams Roll in 59-41 Win at Lincoln (Pa.)

LINCOLN, PA – The Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (6-6, 1-1 CIAA) picked up their first Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) win of the season when the team took a 59-41 win over the Lincoln (Pa.) Lady Lions (5-7, 1-1 CIAA), Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Lady Rams improve to 1-1 in CIAA play and secured their first road win of the season.

The Lady Rams took the win behind another stellar defensive effort for the team, which held the Lady Lions to shooting just 18.8% from the floor on their home court. The Lady Rams were active as well, forcing 27 Lincoln (Pa.) turnovers in the game. WSSU junior guard Taylar Wells led Lady Rams to the win behind a season-high 22 points in the game, just two points shy of tying her career-high in scoring. Fellow junior guard Keyrra Gillespie added 11 points with a team-high six assists. Senior forward Schatavia Gray pulled in a team-high eight rebounds, just one more than sophomore forward Somalia McKenney.

The game was a close one early with the two teams battling to a 13-13 tie at the 9:42 mark in the first half. It was then that the Lady Rams took control of the contest with a 10-1 run, capped by a McKenzie Weston free throw that put the Lady Rams on top, 23-14 with 3:26 left in the half. From there, the Lady Rams held off the Lady Lions to take a 30-18 lead into the locker room at the half.

The Lady Rams kept things going in the second half, pushing their lead to 19 points 44-25 midway through the half. It was a 14-7 WSSU run over the first 10 minutes that gave the Lady Rams the cushion they needed. With the game in hand, the Lady Rams turned things up offensively, as a free throw by sophomore forward Dionna Scott gave the Lady Rams their largest lead of the game 59-38 with 1:24 left to play. From there, the Lady Rams would allow just three more points to finish the afternoon with the 59-41 victory.

The Lady Rams will remain on the road for their next action as the team will head to Bowie, Maryland to take on the Bowie State Bulldogs and complete their three-game road trip.
