RALEIGH, NC – For the second straight game, the Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (9-8, 4-3 CIAA) saw a lead disappear in the final seconds in a 59-57 road loss to the Saint Augustine's Lady Falcons (8-8, 4-3 CIAA), Saturday afternoon. After taking a 57-56 lead with 00:45 left to play, the Lady Rams allowed three unanswered points to the Lady Falcons to take the tough loss.
The game was a see-saw battle that saw momentum swing to both ends of the court with 16 lead changes and 13 ties.
The loss came in spite of some inspired individual efforts for the Lady Rams, who were plagued by turnovers and foul troubles in the game. As a team, the Lady Rams shot a solid 38.6% from the floor and forced 19 Lady Falcon turnovers. The Lady Rams also controlled the backboards, pulling in 42 rebounds and allowing just 29 SAU rebounds. However, the team committed 29 turnovers and sent the Lady Falcons to the free throw line for 29 attempts. WSSU sophomore forward Dionna Scott recorded her first career double-double with a career-high 18 points and 10 rebounds in the game. The effort marked just the second time this season that the team has seen a double-double since the season opener against Mars Hill. Sophomore forward Raven Fields added a career-high 11 points as well.
The game was a tough battle early, but the Lady Rams were able to jump out to the early 14-7 lead after a Fields lay-up at the 11:45 mark. The lead would not last for the team as an 11-4 Saint Augustine's scoring streak tied the game, 18-18 with 4:43 left in the first half. From there, the two teams traded baskets to leave the in the final minutes. After a Scott free throw with 23 seconds left in the half gave the Lady Rams a 26-25 lead, the Lady Falcons scored a lay-up with 15 seconds left and sent the Lady Rams to the locker room with a 27-26 deficit.
The second half turned out to be a battle as well as a Fields three-pointer at the 18:34 mark tied the game for the fifth time. The Lady Rams were able to get things going with an eight-point run that put the team on top, 42-37 with 11:47 left. The lead was the largest that the team would manage in the half. From there, the Lady Rams saw their lead disappear as Saint Augustine's scored five straight points to tie the game once again 42-42 with 9:42 left to play. The two teams would continue their battle back and forth with neither team going ahead by more than five points. After falling behind, 51-46 with 4:36 left to play, the Lady Rams battled back to tie the game, 53-53 with 1:45 left.
From there, the Lady Rams would work their way back into the lead in the final minutes when a Fields lay-up with 00:45 left set the stage for the dramatic ending. The Lady Rams missed a pair of critical free throws which led to a Saint Augustine's lay-up with 00:11 left that put WSSU behind 58-57. After the Lady Rams committed a turnover on the ensuing possession, the team committed a foul to stop the clock and allowed the Lady Falcons to add another free throw that left the game with the final score, 59-57 with four seconds left. From there a failed WSSU shot attempt ended the afternoon for WSSU.
With the loss, the Lady Rams take their second straight conference defeat. The team has lost a pair of games by a total of four points. The Lady Rams will have a chance to get things going, Wednesday when the team hosts the Shaw Lady Bears in a 5:30 p.m. contest.
