WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (12-12, 7-7 CIAA) took a tough 59-55 home loss to the #20 Fayetteville State Lady Broncos. After leading for much of the game, the Lady Rams fell victim to a late Lady Bronco surge that snapped the team's three-game Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Southern Division winning streak.
The Lady Rams gave a great effort in the game as the team built a 12-point second half lead, but were outscored 10-4 in the final three minutes of the game to take the tough loss. As a team, the Lady Rams shot a solid 37.7% from the floor in the game, but allowed a scorching hot 47.8% shooting effort by the Lady Broncos. WSSU junior guard Keyrra Gillespie tied her career-high with 14 points in the game and dished out four assists in the game. Sophomore forward Dionna Scott had another great game with 13 points in the game. Sophomore forward Somalia McKenney tied fellow sophomore Tareka Cesar with a team-high six rebounds each in the game.
In the early going, the Lady Rams jumped out to a 19-10 lead over the Lady Broncos at the 7:58 mark in the first half. The team soon had to fend off the first FSU run as the Lady Broncos tied the game 21-21 with 3:12 left in the first half. Though the Lady Rams would regain the lead, 25-21 with 2:34 left, the Lady Rams and Lady Broncos took a 25-25 tie into the locker room at halftime.
The second half turned out to be similar to the first half with the Lady Rams once again jumping out to another big lead. The Lady Rams opened the game with a 15-3 run that left WSSU on top, 40-28 with 14:11 left to play. FSU would bounce back to tie the game, 42-42 at the 9:48 mark, but the Lady Rams continued to hold off the Lady Broncos until the 3:07 mark when an FSU jumper tied the game for the eighth time, 51-51. From there, the Lady Rams ran out of gas with just one field goal in the final three minutes of play to take the loss.
With the loss, the Lady Rams fall to 3-5 in the CIAA Southern Division. The team is currently tied with the Johnson C. Smith Lady Golden Bulls for fourth place in the division.
