CHARLOTTE, NC – The Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (15-12) opened the 2013 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Tournament with a bang, with a decisive 73-56 win over the Bowie State Lady Bulldogs, Tuesday afternoon at the Time Warner Cable Arena. The Lady Rams took the win behind one of their most impressive efforts of the season when the team shot a scorching hot 48.1% from the field in the game.
The Lady Rams were especially impressive in the paint where the team scored 28 points and also scored 20 points off turnovers. WSSU sophomore forward Dionna Scott led the way for the Lady Rams with a team-high 16 points while junior guard Taylar Wells added 12 points. Sophomore forward Somalia McKenney also had a great game with seven points and eight rebounds in front of her hometown crowd. She tied senior forward Schatavia Gray with a game-high eight rebounds.
The Lady Rams got off to a slow start to the game, allowing Bowie State to jump out to an early 8-0 lead, but the team stayed patient and regained control with an 11-2 run that gave WSSU its first lead of the game, 11-10 with 1:40 left in the first half. From there, Bowie State would try to answer the WSSU run, but the Lady Rams took control late in the half and would never look back. After taking a 20-20 tie with 7:16 left in the half, the Lady Rams outscored Bowie State, 18-6 to close out the half and took a 38-26 lead into the locker room at halftime.
The momentum kept rolling for the Lady Rams in the second half. Through the early portion of the half, the Lady Rams held Bowie State to just two field goals in the first seven minutes while pushing their lead to 17 points, 49-32 with 12:45 left to play. Though Bowie State would continue to battle, the Lady Rams outmanned the short-handed Lady Bulldogs and cruised to the 73-56 victory.
With the win, the Lady Rams move to the second round of the tournament where they will face the Shaw Lady Bears, tomorrow in a 5:00 p.m. game at Time Warner Cable Arena in downtown Charlotte, N.C.
