EDINBORO, PA – The Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (3-2) showed their heart and determination as they clawed their way to a huge 59-58 road win at Edinboro (Pa.) Fighting Scots (2-1), Monday evening. In a game that turned out to be a battle all evening long, WSSU senior forward Amanda Hairston hit a clutch lay-up with 14 seconds left to seal the victory for the Lady Rams.
"This was the first game since I have been here that I thought we played with a will to win," WSSU women's basketball head coach A.G. Hall said following the victory. "We have to do some things better, but our will was there. I'm very proud of the way we played tonight."
As a team, the Lady Rams gave an impressive performance at both ends of the court with the team shooting an efficient 45.1% from the field and holding the high-scoring Edinboro squad to just 58 points and shooting 38.2% from the field. The Lady Rams brought their trademark defense to the game as well, forcing 21 turnovers in the game. Individually, Hairston led the Lady Rams with 18 points and six rebounds. Junior forward Raven Fields also had a great game with 10 points and seven rebounds as well.
The Lady Rams took control of the game early as a Hairston lay-up at the 12:27 mark capped an 18-10 start by WSSU and gave the team its largest lead of the game. However, a late surge by the Scots cut the Lady Rams' lead down to just one point, 22-21 with 7:49 left in the half. A pair of back-to-back three-pointers from the Scots in the final minutes of the half put the Lady Rams behind for the first time in the game, 28-31 with 2:46 left to play. However, the Lady Rams showed their mettle when the team held their opponents scoreless for the remainder of the half and scored a pair of baskets to take a 32-31 lead into the locker room at the half.
In the second half, the Lady Rams would once again have their will tested when they once again fended off a furious late comeback effort by the Scots. The half began in the same manner as the first half when the Lady Rams jumped out to a 42-34 lead on a jumper by junior forward Jovonah Graham with 12:44 left to play. Much like the first half, the Scots once again made a furious comeback once again. The Scots went on an 11-4 run erased the WSSU lead and left the Lady Rams trailing 43-45 with 7:59 left to play. Though down, the Lady Rams would not relent as a lay-up by junior forward Somalia McKenney tied the game, 52-52 with 3:27 left to play. From there, the two teams went on to battle with neither side backing down. When an Edinboro lay-up with 00:39 left put the Lady Rams behind 58-57, a Hairston lay-up with 00:14 left put the Lady Rams on top for good. From there, the Lady Rams turned to their staunch defense to secure the win.
With the win, the Lady Rams improve to 3-2 on the season and will return home for their next action when they host the Barton Bulldogs on December 13th. For more information on Lady Rams basketball, contact the WSSU Office of Athletic Media Relations at (336) 750-2143 or log on to www.WSSURams.com.
