Lady Rams Stage Big Second Half Comeback for 72-63 Win

WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (8-4, 2-0 CIAA) took their second straight Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) win, Saturday when the team defeated the Lincoln (Pa.) Lady Lions (6-5, 0-2 CIAA), 72-63 at the C.E. Gaines Center. After taking a 33-29 deficit into the locker room at halftime, the Lady Rams rallied with 43 second half points to take the win.

The Lady Rams had to get out of their own way to take the win as the team struggled with 29 turnovers in the game. The Lady Rams had a strong shooting effort in the win, shooting 41.5% (22-of-53)from the floor to take the win. WSSU senior guard Jasmine Elum led the way with 17 points in the game while junior forward Dionna Scott nearly pulled off her third double-double of the season with nine points and 10 rebounds. Fellow junior forward Somalia McKenney came off the bench to give the team a big effort with 11 points in the game while senior forward Amanda Hairston added 11 points.

The first half was an ugly one for the Lady Rams as the team shot 33.3% from the floor and committed 13 turnovers. The team was also plagued by fouls with WSSU amassing over 10 fouls before the midpoint of the half. The Lady Rams jumped out to an early 8-1 lead over the first three minutes following a McKenney lay-up at the 17:34 mark. However, the team ran into some struggles with the Lady Lions scoring seven unanswered points to tie the game 8-8 with 13:36 left to play in the half. The Lady Rams' struggles persisted down the stretch of the half with Lincoln (Pa.) pushing its lead to as many as 12 points 31-19 with 4:02 left in the half. The Lady Rams would mount a furious effort in the final minutes of the half as they held the Lady Lions to just one field goal in the final four minutes of the half and went on a 10-2 run to take a 33-29 deficit into the locker room at halftime.

The second half turned out to be a much different story as the Lady Rams outscored the Lady Lions 43-30 in the half. The Lady Rams tied the game at the 12:41 mark when an Elum free throw capped a 12-8 run by the team. From there, the Lady Rams continued their push, outscoring the Lady Lions, 12-2 over the next two minutes to take a 53-43 lead with 9:56 left. From there, the Lady Rams had to hold off the Lady Lions, who cut the WSSU lead down to four points 57-53 with 6:21. The Lady Rams went on to regain control of the game for good with an 8-4 run, capped by a pair of free throws by junior forward Jovonah Graham that put the team ahead, 67-57 with 2:51 left to play. Once in control the Lady Rams remained in control and sealed their 72-63 victory.

With the win, the Lady Rams remain undefeated in CIAA play and improve to 8-4 overall. The team will return to action, Monday when they host the Bowie State Lady Bulldogs, Monday.
