WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (13-11, 7-7 CIAA, 3-5 CIAA South) gave it their all, but the team came up short in a tough 68-59 loss to the Shaw Lady Bears (16-8, 10-4 CIAA, 6-2 CIAA South), Monday evening. The Lady Rams gave a great effort in the game, keeping the game within reach for nearly all 40 minutes of play. However, the team fell victim to a late surge by the Lady Bears and took their second straight loss.
The Lady Rams took the loss in spite of a solid offensive effort as the team shot a solid 35.7% from the floor, including nailing seven three-pointers in the game. However, the team struggled to stop the Lady Bears who shot a scorching hot 60.0% from the floor. WSSU junior forward Raven Fields led the way for the Lady Rams with 15 points, all coming from five three pointers. For the game, she connected on five-of-10 three pointers. Senior guard Jasmine Elum added a game-high 19 points. Senior forward Amanda Hairston and junior forward Jovonah Graham added four rebounds each to lead the team.
The game was a competitive affair for all 40 minutes and began with a strong back-and-forth battle between the two teams. The two teams battled to a 7-7 tie at the 15:39 mark in the first half before Shaw rattled off a 9-2 run that left the Lady Rams trailing, 16-9 with 12:24 left in the half. Though down, the Lady Rams would not give in as the cut their deficit down to just four points when a lay-up by junior forward Somalia McKenney left the Lady Rams trailing, 19-15 with 8:08 left to play. It was then things got tough for the Lady Rams as the team allowed 10 straight points to the Lady Bears to fall behind, 29-15 with 4:45 left in the half. The final minutes of the half saw an improved effort by the Lady Rams as a pair of Fields three-pointers left the team within six points at halftime, 35-29.
The second half saw great effort by the Lady Rams as the team worked to erase their deficit, but the Lady Bears had an answer for every challenge from the Lady Rams. An Elum lay-up and free throw at the 18:17 mark pulled the team within three points, 37-34. The Lady Rams ran into some struggles midway through the half when the Lady Bears fell behind, 51-39 with 12:56 left. However, Fields and Elum would connect on consecutive three-pointers to cut their deficit in half, 51-45 with 12:05 left. Once again Shaw would answer with a run that left the Lady Rams trailing 55-45 with 10:05 left to play. The Lady Rams would answer down the stretch when junior forward Dionna Scott hit a pair of free throws at the 3:55 mark that pulled the Lady Rams within one point, 57-56. The free throws capped an 11-2 run by the Lady Rams. The team held Shaw without a field goal for nearly seven minutes. The Lady Bears had an answer, however with back-to-back three-pointers with just over a minute left to play that left the Lady Rams trailing, 67-56 with 1:18 left to play and effectively sealed the loss. The team would manage a lay-up and a free throw in the final minute of play, but would get no closer and ended the night with the 68-59 loss.
With the loss, the Lady Rams fall to 13-11 overall and 3-5 in Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Southern Division play. The team will hit the road for their next action as they will head to Charlotte, N.C. to take on the Johnson C. Smith Lady Golden Bulls.
