WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (15-11, 9-7 CIAA) clicked on all cylinders with the team took an impressive 82-65 senior night win over the Livingstone Lady Blue Bears (12-14, 7-9 CIAA), Saturday evening. The Lady Rams took the win behind a great overall effort at both ends of the court as they took control of the game early and never looked back on their way to their second straight win.
As a team, the Lady Rams gave a great effort, shooting 47.8% from the floor while holding Livingstone to shooting just 31.4% from the floor. The team also forced 18 turnovers by the Lady Blue Bears as well. In fitting fashion, senior guard Jasmine Elum led the WSSU scoring effort with 22 points and two steals in the game. She was joined by junior forward Dionna Scott's 15 points and eight rebounds while junior forward Raven Fields added 13 points, including a pair of three pointers. Senior forward Amanda Hairston nearly notched a double-double when she recorded nine points with six rebounds in the game.
The game got off to a slow start for both teams as they played to an 8-8 tie at the 13:40 mark in the first half, but the Lady Rams soon took control with a 9-0 run that put the team on top 17-8 with 11:17 left in the half. The Lady Rams found themselves being challenged down the stretch of the half as Livingste cut the WSSU lead down to five points, 21-16 at the 6:25 mark. However, the Lady Rams had just the answer when the team mounted a 9-3 run to go ahead 30-19 with 4:35 left. The 11-point cushion was the Lady Rams' largest lead of the half. The final minutes of the half saw things heat up as the Lady Rams' lead dwindled down to just two points, 33-31 with 1:42 left in the half. The Lady Rams would clamp down on defense to hold off the Lady Blue Bears and scored four points, including a pair of Scott free throws and an Elum lay-up to take a 37-31 lead into the locker room at the half.
The second half saw the Lady Rams continue to roll as the team opened the half with an 8-3 run and went ahead 45-34 following an Elum lay-up and free throw with 17:50 left. Once in control, the Lady Rams had to battle to keep the pesky Lady Blue Bears at bay. The Lady Rams saw their lead chipped down to just six points, 47-41 with 15:41 left to play, but the team would not relent. The Lady Rams pushed their lead to as many as 19 points, 76-57 with 4:03 left to play and cruised to the 82-66 victory.
With the win, the Lady Rams conclude the 2013-14 regular season with a 15-11 overall record, a 9-7 record in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) and 4-5 in the CIAA Southern Division. The Lady Rams will likely finish third in the CIAA South for the third straight season. The Lady Rams will move on to take part in the 2014 CIAA Tournament.
