SPARTANBURG, SC – The Winston-Salem State Rams (3-4) clicked on all cylinders when the team claimed its first road win of the season. The Rams took a dominating 85-73 win over the Converse College Valkyries (4-3), Sunday afternoon. The Rams exploded on offense to claim the win as they scored a season-high 85 points in the game.
The Rams took the win behind a stellar offensive performance. As a team, the Rams shot 41.6% (32-of-77) from the floor, but still managed to put up 85 points in the game. Defensively, the team was equally impressive, holding Converse to shooting just 33.3% (21-of-63) in the game. The Rams took control of the game with a dominating first quarter. The team used a stifling defensive effort to take control of the game as they held Converse scoreless for the first three minutes of the game and didn't allow their first field goal until the 6:53 mark. With the effort, the Rams took an 11-2 lead over the Valkyries. It was in the final minutes of the quarter that the Rams really took control as the team went ahead 24-10 after a pair of free throws from freshman guard Teara Johnson. In the end, the Rams took a 24-12 lead at the end of the quarter.
In the second quarter, Converse mounted a comeback effort, but the Rams remained in control. After a Pate jumper with 8:45 left in the quarter gave the Rams their largest lead of the half, 28-12, the Rams had to fend off the Valkyries' charge. The Rams allowed the Valkyries to cut their lead down to seven points, 38-31, in the final minute, but the Rams stayed on top, 39-31 at the half.
The third quarter saw the Rams' biggest offensive effort of the game as the team scored 26 points to pull away from the Valkyries. The Rams held Converse to just one field goal in the final three minutes of the quarter while the Rams pulled away to take a 65-46 lead over the Valkyries.
From there, the Rams were able to fend off the Valkyries' effort to get back into the game. Once again, the Rams turned to their defense to take control of the game. The team held the Valkyries without a field goal for the first three minutes of the quarter for the second time in the game and built a 72-52 lead before the Valkyries could hit their first shot of the quarter. The Rams would allow Converse no closer than 14 points for the remainder of the game and closed the game with a 4-1 run in the final minute to claim the 85-73 road win.
With the win, the Rams improve to 3-4 overall and claim their first road win of the season.
