West Virginia State Defeats WSSU Women 61-47 In Red Roof Classic Second Round

Jan. 1, 2006

Final Stats

INSTITUTE, WV - The second day of action from the Red Roof Women's Basketball Classic in Institute West Virginia was just as unkind as day one action as WSSU fell in defeat to the host-team Lady Yellow Jackets of West Virginia State University by the score of 61-47 on Saturday afternoon.

The Lady Rams and Lady Yellow Jackets were deadlocked at 27-27 after the first 20 minutes of play as WSSU used seven West Virginia State University turnovers to keep a close game dead-even.

The second half of play saw the host-team Lady Yellow Jackets outscore the visiting Lady Rams 34-20 en route to the 61-47 win, their seventh of the season.

The Lady Rams were led by Shalonda Carter who, in only her second game back following a nagging injury, chipped in with 16 points and 16 rebounds for her first double-double of the season.

She was joined in double figures by her teammate Janet Robinson who tallied 11 points as she was the only other WSSU player who broke into double digits.

The Lady Yellow Jackets were led by Randi Cary who recorded 13 points as she and Lasha Anderson (12 points) broke into the double-digits.

WSSU falls to 5-7 on the season with the loss as West Virginia State improves to 7-3 overall with the win.

The Lady Rams return to action on Tuesday, January 3, 2006 as they play host to the Lady Vikings of Elizabeth City State University at 5:30 pm.
