Lady Vikings Down Lady Rams 71-63; WSSU Drops Third Straight Game

Jan. 3, 2006

Final Stats

WINSTON-SALEM, NC - The Winston-Salem State University dropped their third consecutive game on Tuesday evening at the C.E. Gaines Center in Winston-Salem, NC as they fell in defeat by the score of 71-63 in front of 2,100 fans in CIAA women's basketball league action.

The first half of play was one that saw WSSU play less-than-perfect basketball and remain in contention to pull out a win as the home-team Lady Rams committed 11 turnovers that the Lady Vikings turned in to 10 easy points en route to an early lead for the visitors.

However, a run in the latter-going of the first 20 minutes of play enabled the Lady Rams to cut that double-digit Lady Viking lead to only three points headed into the halftime intermission as WSSU trailed 35-32 at the break.

Twenty-six ECSU points in the pant would be the cause for the WSSU first-half deficit as the Lady Vikings earned 13 easy buckets during the first 20 minutes, including three three-point plays.

The second half would see the Lady Vikings come out of the locker room scorching as they connected on four of their first five field goal attempts to open up their lead.

In stark contrast, the Lady Rams would miss their first five field goal attempts of the second period as they saw the Lady Vikings increase their lead from three points to a game-high 13 with 14:41 remaining in the contest.

Despite several offensive runs by the home-team Lady Rams, one of which cut the deficit to only two points, the Lady Vikings and 2004-05 CIAA Rookie of the Year Celeste Trahan, who recorded yet another double-double this season as she tallied 14 points and 16 rebounds, held on for the win.  Trahan continues to lead the nation in rebounding with over 16.0 rebounds per contest.

With the loss, the Lady Rams fall to 5-8 overall and drop to 0-2 in the CIAA.  The Lady Vikings improve to 2-5 overall with the win and in the process move to 1-0 in the CIAA with the victory.

The Lady Rams return to action on Thursday, January 5, 2006 as they take to the road to face the Lady Panthers of Virginia Union University in Richmond, VA at 5:30 pm.
