Despite Leading By As Many As 14 Points Lady Rams Fall To Virginia Union 69-59

Jan. 5, 2005

Final Stats

Winston-Salem, NC - Blowing double-digit leads and falling in defeat is becoming a disturbing trend for the Winston-Salem State University Lady Rams basketball team. This trend continued on Tuesday evening in the C.E. Gaines Center as the Lady Rams lost their second consecutive game, and even more dishearteningly, squandered a double-digit lead for the second straight game, en route to a loss, this time to Virginia Union by the score of 69-59 to drop to 8-4 overall (0-1 CIAA) in the process.

The game started off on a good note for WSSU as the Lady Rams jumped out to a 5-0 lead only 40 seconds into the contest, eventually building a 12-point cushion with only 36 seconds remaining in the first half of play.

WSSU gladly took that lead to the halftime intermission, leading 37-25 and looking to be firmly in control of earning their ninth win of the year, and first CIAA win of the season.

However, it was not meant to be, and that fact was made apparent in the second half's early-going. The Lady Panthers would reel off an amazing 18-2 run over the next 4:18 of play as Virginia Union would nearly double their first-half point total in the second half's first five minutes.

The run would put VUU ahead by the score of 43-39, and the visiting Lady Panthers would never trail again in the contest as Virginia Union snuck out of the C.E Gaines Center with an important 69-59 win.

The Lady Rams were led by Janet Robinson who tallied 16 points in the loss, and Shalonda Carter who recorded her fifth double-double of the 2004-05 season as she chipped in with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Virginia Union was led by Pria Stellmacher who tallied 16 points on six of 17 shooting.

With the win, the Lady Panthers improve to 6-3 overall, and more importantly, improve to 1-0 in the CIAA. The Lady Rams fall to 8-4 overall and fall to 0-1 in the CIAA.

The Lady Rams will return to action on Thursday evening, January 6th, 2005 as they take on the Lady Vikings of Elizabeth City State in Elizabeth City, NC. WSSU's male counterparts will round out the double-header later that evening at 7:30 pm versus ECSU.
