Lady Rams Earn 10th Win Of Season After Handing St. Aug 68-64 Defeat

Jan. 11, 2005

Final Stats

Raleigh, NC - The Winston-Salem State University Lady Rams women's basketball team did something on Tuesday evening that they did not do until the very last week of January last year (01/24/04), they won their 10th game of the season. WSSU improved to 10-4 overall (2-1 CIAA, 1-0 Western Division) on Tuesday evening as they defeated the Lady Falcons of St. Augustine's College 68-64 in a CIAA league basketball contest at Emery Gymnasium in Raleigh, NC.

The Lady Rams jumped ahead early and never looked back as they would never trail in the contest en route to their 10th overall victory and second straight win over a conference opponent.

WSSU would shoot 43.2% from the field in the game's first 20 minutes, hitting 16 of 37 field goal attempts as they were able to open up a lead by as many as 12 points.

Kadina Baldwin (So./Fayetteville, NC) would prove to be nearly unstoppable in the half as she single-handedly dismantled the Lady Falcons defense on her way to scoring 12 of her team-high 17 points in the first half.

Behind Baldwin's 12 points the Lady Rams were able to take a comfortable nine-point cushion to the locker room, leading 36-27. All signs pointed to an impending Lady Ram victory as heading into the contest, WSSU was an impressive 6-3 in 2004-05 when leading an opponent at the halftime intermission.

The second half was nearly identical to the first as the Lady Rams used another stellar defensive effort to continue to hold their firm grasp on the game. Despite cooling off in the shooting department, as WSSU shot only 33.3% in the half, the Lady Rams were able to stay one step ahead of the host-team Lady Falcons and earn the 68-64 victory.

WSSU would be the beneficiaries of having four players in double figures as Tiffany Tonkins would record her second double-double of the season, posting 12 points and a dozen rebounds. She was joined by Baldwin who tallied 17 points and Janet Robinson and Nikki Eason who tallied 13 and 11 points respectively.

Leading the way for the Lady Falcons was 2003-04 All-Rookie Team member Valicia Brown who recorded 20 points and 10 rebounds in the losing effort. She was joined by Latika Ross who also recorded a double-double with 13 points and 15 rebounds in game.

With the win, the Lady Rams improve to 10-4 overall (2-1 CIAA, 1-0 Western Division) while the Lady Falcons fall to 9-4 overall (1-2 CIAA, 0-1 Western Division) and had their five-game win streak broken in the process.

The Lady Rams return to action on January 20th, 2004 at 5:30 pm when they welcome the #5 ranked (NCAA Division II) Lady Bears of Shaw University to the LJVM Coliseum Annex.
