Feb. 8, 2007

Final Stats

The Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (7-20) picked up their second win in a row, Thursday night when the team took a 49-44 win over the Bethune-Cookman Lady Wildcats (4-18). It was the Lady Rams defense that keyed the win as the team held Bethune-Cookman to shooting 32% from the field and forced 18 turnovers in the game.

The Lady Rams' frontcourt of sophomore forward Lavontay Johnson and senior center Shalonda Carter combined for 22 points, 22 rebounds, and two blocks in the game. Johnson led the Lady Rams' offensive attack with 14 points and seven rebounds while Carter totaled eight points and 15 rebounds, two rebounds shy of her season-high. Sophomore guard Richea Harris and senior guard Latoya Armstrong added eight points each.

Though the Lady Rams controlled much of the contest, the team didn't look like they would in the early going scoreless for the first four minutes of the game, but the team's strong defense kept the game close as B-CC could just only build a 4-0 lead in the first four minutes of the contest. Armstrong got the Lady Rams back into the quickly hitting a three-pointer at the 16:00 mark. Though the Lady Rams were able to stay close, Bethune-Cookman continued to control the game pushing their lead to as many as seven points, 10-3 with 14:08 left in the first half.

It was then that the Lady Rams would turn up the defense and heat up the offense going on a 7-2 run to cut the B-CC lead to just two points on a Johnson three-pointer at the 12:05 mark. It was Harris who gave the Lady Rams their first lead of the game hitting a lay-up at the 8:49 mark that put the team on top, 19-18. the Lady Rams would never look back holding Bethune-Cookman to just 27 first half points and took a 33-27 lead into the lockerroom at halftime.

Both teams struggled to find offense in the second half combining for as many second half points as WSSU scored in the first half. The Lady Rams and Wildcats combined for 33 second half points in the game. The Lady Rams were outscored 17-16 in the second half, but the team's tough defensive stance proved to be enough to pull out the victory.

The Lady Rams controlled the entire second half beginning with an 8-2 WSSU run that put the Lady Rams on top as Johnson hit her second three-pointer of the game at the 14:49 mark that left the home team leading, 41-29 with 14:49 left in the game. The Lady Rams continued to control the game maintaining the 10-point lead for the next eight minutes. Bethune-Cookman did make a run down the final stretch of the game, cutting the WSSU lead down to four points, 48-44 with 2:44 left to play.  Both teams would clamp down on defense as a Carter free throw with 2:15 left to play was the final score of the contest and left the Lady Rams with the 49-44 win.

With the win, Winston-Salem State improves to 5-4 against teams from the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference this season and 2-0 in the month of February. The win also improves the team's home record to 3-7 this season as well. The Lady Rams will head to Farmville, VA to take on the Longwood Lancers next Tuesday before wrapping up the season at home versus Savannah State on February 21st.
