WINSTON-SALEM, NC - Nothing seemed to go right for the Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (2-21) in a disappointing 67-26 loss to the Hampton Lady Pirates (12-10), Monday evening. Though there was no shortage of effort by the team, the Lady Rams struggled in every aspect of the game in the loss. The team shot 26.8% and committed 22 turnovers in the loss.
As a team, the Lady Rams were aggressive offensively, putting up 41 shots in the game, but managed to hit just 11 shots, including just three made field goals in the first half against a tenacious Hampton defense. WSSU junior forward Vontisha Woods led all Lady Ram scorers with six points and six rebounds in the game. She and freshman forward Shawanda Hanton were the only two WSSU players with more than one field goal in the game. Junior forward Jalesa Byrd also pulled in six rebounds in the game.
The first half was especially tough on the Lady Rams who managed to hit just three shots in the period. The team showed some top notch defense early, holding the Lady Pirates within reach at 10-3 with just over 13 minutes left in the first half. A Woods jumper at the 13:28 mark turned out to be the first WSSU field goal of the game. The jumper was followed by a lay-up by fellow junior guard MaLisa Bumpus less than a minute later that pulled the Lady Rams within five points, 10-5. However, it was then that the Lady Rams' struggles began as the team was held to just one more field goal for the half while the Lady Pirates ran off a 21-3 run that left the Lady Rams trailing, 31-8 at the half. A lay-up by junior forward Jalesa Byrd and a free throw by fellow junior Rene Rector were the only remaining WSSU scores of the half.
The Lady Rams would make an effort at a comeback with a Woods jumper at the 18:27 mark that pulled the Lady Rams within 21 points, 31-10 with 18:27 left in the game. The bad news for the Lady Rams was that Hampton ran off 29 unanswered points before the next Lady Ram score. With every reason to give in, the Lady Rams kept fighting with a 16-5 run to close out the game and finished the evening with the 67-26 loss.
The Lady Rams will have little time to rest, however, as the team will head to Baltimore, Maryland to take on the Morgan State Lady Bears, Saturday afternoon.
