Lady Rams Hand Saint Paul's A 68-59 Defeat In Lawrenceville, VA

Feb. 24, 2005

Final Stats

Lawrenceville, VA - The Winston-Salem State University Lady Rams finished the 2004-05 regular-season with a victory on Thursday afternoon in Lawrenceville, VA as they defeated the Lady Tigers of Saint Paul's College by the score of 68-59 as WSSU improved to 13-14 overall and 5-11 in the CIAA (3-7 CIAA West).

Playing with only eight players suited up due to injury, Winston-Salem State University head coach John Williams used a small lineup to earn an important regular-season ending victory over the Lady Tigers.

The first half of play was one that saw Saint Paul's keep the WSSU lead in check for the better part of 20 minutes as the Lady Rams could not put away the pesky Lady Tigers.

However, the second half of play would see WSSU put the game on cruise control, as they led by double-digits for more than 15 of the second half's 20 minutes.

To the Lady Tigers' credit, they did not give up, forcing multiple WSSU turnovers which they converted into easy baskets.

Despite the loss of the majority of their inside game due to injury, the Lady Rams were still able to control the paint in the game as Shalonda Carter recorded yet another double-double as she recorded 16 points and 12 rebounds, turning in a six of 12 shooting performance from the field, and a four of six shooting day from the free-throw line.

Carter was helped by Cherena Douglass who recorded 14 points and pulled down two rebounds, going five of eight from the field in the process. Latoya Armstrong recorded 12 points and Nikki Eason, who was playing in her final regular-season game as a Lady Ram, tallied 11 points, five rebounds and seven assists.

WSSU shot 40% from the field on the day en route to the win, due in part to the inside game being effective for most of the afternoon.

With the win, the Lady Rams improve to 13-14 overall, and 5-11 in the CIAA (3-7 CIAA West). The Lady Tigers fall to 0-27 overall, 0-16 in the CIAA and 0-10 in the CIAA East.

Both teams will return to action starting on Monday, February 28th, 2005 in the first round of the 2005 CIAA Women's Basketball Championship Tournament.
