Final Stats

Hickory, N.C. - The Lenoir-Rhyne Women's Basketball Team (1-0) opened the 2004-05 campaign with a 77-72 win over Winston-Salem State (0-1) Tuesday night at Shuford Gymnasium in Hickory, NC in the season-opener for both teams.

The Bears were led by senior center Crystal Clary (Hampton, Va./Campbell University), a returning NCAA Division II All-American, who tallied a game-high 22 points while senior guard Lanica Williams (Newport News, Va./Alabama A&M) added 17 points that included 12 after intermission as Lenoir-Rhyne squeaked by the visiting Lady Rams.

The game was close throughout until sophomore guard Ashley Gordon (Fort Eustis, Va./Woodside HS) sank a pair of free throws to break a 67-67 tie with 1:40 left to give Lenoir-Rhyne the lead for good.

Lenoir-Rhyne, which finished the contest 24-for-29 from the free throw line, was clutch down the stretch, going 12-for-14 from the charity stripe in the final 1:40 of action to preserve their win.

Kadina Baldwin (Fayetteville, N.C.) led the Lady Rams with a team-high, and career-high 21 points. Shalonda Carter (Fayetteville, N.C.) also scored in double figures for Winston-Salem State as she recorded 14 points.

Lenoir-Rhyne hosts the King on Friday at 6 p.m., while Winston-Salem State returns home for a Friday 7:30 p.m. contest against Bluefield State in the first round of the 2004 Lady Ram Invitational basketball tournament.
