Seven Lady Rams Record Points As WSSU Falls To Auburn 85-47

Nov. 17, 2006

Final Stats |  Quotes

AUBURN, AL -- Despite the fact that seven Lady Rams recorded at least two points, the Lady Rams of Winston-Salem State University fell in defeat to the Auburn University Tigers at Beard-Eaves Memorial Coliseum on Friday evening in Auburn, Alabama as WSSU fell to 0-3 on the season.

DeWanna Bonner proved to be too much for the Lady Rams as the 6'4" sophomore guard recorded a career-high 28 points and pulled down 11 rebounds as she led four Auburn players into double figures.

Auburn started the evening by scoring the game's first 11 points before a jumper by WSSU's Latoya Armstrong broke the Lady Rams' scoring drought 4:09 into the contest.

The Tigers would put together a 7-0 run immediately following Armstrong's basket as Auburn pulled out to a 19-2 lead with just over 12 minutes to play in the half, opening up a lead that they would never relinquish.

The final 10 minutes of the half would see the Lady Rams awaken offensively as WSSU tallied 15 points over the span.  However, Auburn would answer with offensive fireworks of their own as the Tigers raced ahead to lead by as many as 29 points as they took a 46-17 lead into the locker room at halftime.

Following halftime, the Lady Rams looked like an entirely different team as they very nearly mirrored Auburn's offensive output as WSSU was outscored by only nine points, 39-30 in the final 20 minutes of play.

Candace Saunders recorded all 10 of her points and all three of her rebounds in the second half of play as both she and Shalonda Carter tallied double-digit scoring performances.  Carter's 10 points and nine rebounds marks the second time this season that she has nearly recorded a double-double, missing her 32nd career double-digit scoring and rebounding performance by only one rebound.

WSSU used solid defense and excellent free throw shooting to pull themselves back into the contest as Dee Stokes' team hit 11 of their 12 shots from the charity stripe after failing to shoot a free throw in the first half of play.

The loss drops the Lady Rams to 0-3 on the season as Auburn improves to 2-0 overall.  Winston-Salem State University returns to action on Sunday as they face Alabama State University at 6:00 pm Eastern Standard Time.
