Lady Rams Control The Paint En Route To Easy 77-51 Win Over St. Paul's

Nov. 20, 2004

Final Stats

Winston-Salem, NC - The Winston-Salem State University Lady Rams' basketball team used 36 points in the paint from forwards Shalonda Carter (22 points, 12 rebounds) and Tiffany Tonkins (14 points, nine rebounds, seven blocks) to hand the Lady Tigers of St. Paul's College their third loss of the 2004-05 season, by the score of 77-51 as WSSU improved to 2-1 overall (0-0 CIAA).

The Lady Rams were never challenged in the contest as every Lady Ram on the roster would record at least two minutes of playing time and all but two roster members would score points.

The first half of play saw the Lady Rams open up a ten-point lead at 20-10 only nine minutes into the contest as WSSU raced ahead and never looked back. The Lady Rams inside presence was the first half's key point as WSSU scored at will. Forward Shalonda Carter would go a perfect six-for-six during the game's first 20 minutes and Tiffany Tonkins would chip in with eight points and five blocks during the first period of play.

Following the dominance of their forwards, the Lady Rams would mount a 12-2 run near the end of the half to pull ahead by as many as 24 points with nine seconds to play in the half.

The Lady Tigers' Tyanka Lee trimmed the WSSU lead to 23-points with a free throw with no time on the clock as the Lady Rams took a large cushion to the locker room.

The second half of play was much the same as the first as the Lady Rams would trade baskets with the Lady Tigers, eventually increasing their lead to as many as 29 points before closing out the game with the 26-point win.

Shalonda Carter led the Lady Rams with her 22 points and game-high 12 rebounds as she registered the 11th, double-double of her WSSU career. She was joined by Tonkins who recorded the sixth game of her career where she tallied four or more blocks.

Carter and Tonkins were not the only Lady Rams in double figures as guard Latoya Armstrong chipped in with 10 points and four rebounds.

Tyanka Lee led the Lady Tigers with 17 points, nine of them coming from the free throw line as she had a difficult four for 18 day from the field.

With the win the Lady Rams improve to 2-1 on the season (0-0 CIAA) while the Lady Tigers remain winless at 0-3 (0-1 CIAA).

WSSU returns to action on November 23rd, 2004 at 6:00 pm when they play host to Wingate at the C.E. Gaines Center in a non-conference basketball contest.
