Lady Rams Defeat Wingate 54-44 Despite Shooting Only 29.2% From The Field

Nov. 23, 2004

Final Stats

Winston-Salem, NC - The Lady Rams' basketball team was able to sneak out a 10-point victory over the visiting Bulldogs of Wingate University in non-conference basketball action on Tuesday evening at the C.E. Gaines Center despite shooting an unimpressive 29.2% from the field as WSSU hit only 19 of their 65 field-goal attempts.

The Bulldogs would jump out to an early 5-0 lead and cruise through the entire first half of play as WSSU missed 13 of their first 15 shots from the field en route to trailing Wingate by as many as 12 points during the first 20 minutes.

Trailing the Bulldogs by 12 points with 3:16 to play in the half, the Lady Rams used a 7-1 run to close out the half and head to the locker room facing a six point deficit with Wingate leading the contest 27-21.

The second half of play was a completely different story than the first as WSSU head coach John Williams used the halftime intermission to focus his team and get the Lady Rams back on track.

Though WSSU shot only percentage points better during the games' final 20 minutes of play, the Lady Rams used a high-pressure defense to force the visitors to turn the ball over which led to 15 WSSU points.

The Lady Rams would turn a six-point deficit into an eight-point advantage midway through the second half of play as they would never trail again in the contest, en route to the eventual 10-point win.

Leading the way for the Lady Rams was senior guard Nikki Eason (Greenville, SC) who recorded a game-high 13 points on two of 11 shooting from the field. Wingate's Veronica Taylor matched Eason's 13 points and chipped in with 11 rebounds.

With the win, the Lady Rams improve to 3-1 overall (0-0 CIAA) while Wingate falls to 2-3 overall (0-0 SAC). WSSU returns to action on November 26th and 27th as they travel to Atlanta, GA to face both Clark-Atlanta University (Friday at 6:00 pm) and Paine College (Saturday at 3:00 pm).
