Lady Rams Take 58-39 Loss to Colgate

Nov. 25, 2007

Final Stats

COLUMBUS, OH - An inspired effort by the WSSU bench was not enough as the Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (0-4) suffered a 58-39 loss to the Colgate Red Raiders (1-4), Sunday morning. The Lady Rams continued their recent offensive struggles shooting just 24.1% from the field in the loss.

The Lady Rams were solid in spurts throughout the game, but were hampered by a pair of scoring droughts that proved costly in the loss. Freshman guard Corbin Bradford led the way for the Lady Rams with 13 points in the loss, including a pair of three-pointers. Fellow freshman Rene Rector had a big day off the bench with 12 points, all from the three-point line. Senior guard Keoshia Worthy was solid on the day with five assists and just one turnover.

The Lady Rams got off to a slow start to the game hitting just five first half field goals and shooting 17.2% from the field in the first half. Six minutes would go by before the Lady Rams would get their first score of the day, a jumper by freshman guard Nikki Kee from senior guard Keoshia Worthy would be the first score of the game for the Lady Rams, but the team was still hampered by a 10-2 start by the Raiders. Worthy would follow the effort with a steal and lay-up that cut the WSSU deficit down to six points with just over 12 minutes left. A three-pointer by freshman guard Rene Rector would cut the WSSU deficit down to just five points, 12-7 with just under 11 minutes left in the half, but the five-point spread would be as close as the Lady Rams would come for the rest of the half as the team went scoreless for the next eight minutes and fall into an 8-22 deficit. Freshman forward Vontisha Woods would hit a pair of free throws that snapped the scoring drought by the Lady Rams, followed by a lay-up by Worthy. A rebound and lay-up by Woods would be the final WSSU score of the half and left the Lady Rams trailing, 26-14 at the half.

The second half would begin slowly for both teams as neither team recorded a field goal in the first five minutes of the half. The Lady Rams scored the first three points of the half with Worthy hitting a free throw, followed by a jumper that cut the WSSU deficit down to nine, 17-26 with 15:50 left in the game and forced a Colgate timeout. The Lady Rams would get no closer with Colgate hitting a three-pointer a minute later to push the lead by to 12 points, 29-17. WSSU freshman guard Corbin Bradford would give the Lady Rams a lift hitting a pair of jumpers as well as a free throw, but the Raiders would remain on top following a lay-up and a free throw that left the Lady Rams trailing, 34-24.

Colgate would go back in the paint to reestablish the lead, 46-30 following a 12-6 run that would have been critical for the Lady  Rams if not for a pair of three-pointers from Rector and Bradford. The duo would combine for two more WSSU unanswered three-pointers that pulled the team back into the game, 46-36 with 4:36 left to play. Though Colgate would continue to put up the pressure, the Lady Rams were able to keep up with the them with Rector hitting her third three-pointer of the night and keeping the game within 10 points, 49-39 with 2:43 left. Things would take a turn for the worse for the Lady Rams when Worthy would leave the game with an injury.

The Lady Rams struggled without Worthy in the line-up allowing Colgate to score six unanswered points

With the loss, the Lady Rams fall to 0-4 to start the season and will return home to face the South Carolina State Lady Bulldogs at the Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum Annex next Saturday. The game will be the first Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference game of the season for the Lady Rams.
