Atlanta, GA - The Winston-Salem State University Lady Rams basketball team overcame an 11-point deficit in the games' final five minutes of play as they defeated the host-team Lady Panthers of Clark-Atlanta University 65-64 in the first round of the 2004 Lady Panther Invitational basketball tournament at L.S. Epps Gymnasium in Atlanta, GA on Friday evening.
WSSU, who was facing Clark-Atlanta for only the second time in Lady Rams' basketball history, evened the all-time series at 1-1 with the 65-64 victory. The only other time that the two teams met on the hardwood was in the first game for both teams last season, as CAU snuck out of the Gaines Center with a 61-50 win.
The Lady Rams, who were staring a double-digit deficit in the face with only 300 seconds left on the game clock, used a high-pressure defense to force turnovers and get themselves in position to win the game, and in the process earn their fourth-straight victory.
WSSU, who moves to 4-1 overall with the win, (0-0 CIAA) was the beneficiary of Tiffany Tonkins' (Jr./Greensboro, NC) career-high 18 points. In addition to her double-digit scoring outburst, she chipped in with eight rebounds.
Joining her in double-digits were guards Nikki Eason (Sr./Greenville, SC) and Latoya Armstrong (So./Rocky Mount, NC) who both recorded 13 points each in the win.
WSSU will take their 4-1 overall record, and four game win streak and put it on the line tomorrow afternoon (Saturday) at 3:00 pm when they face Paine College to close out the 2004 Lady Panther Invitational basketball tournament.
