Lady Rams Defeat Paine College 74-62 As WSSU Wins Their Fifth Straight Game

Nov. 27, 2004

Final Stats

Atlanta, GA - The Lady Rams of Winston-Salem State University won their fifth straight game on Saturday afternoon as they defeated the Lady Tigers of Paine College in the second round of the 2004 Lady Panther Invitational women's basketball tournament from the L.S. Epps Gymnasium on the campus of Clark-Atlanta University in Atlanta, GA.

The contest was a nip and tuck affair throughout the majority of the contest as the two teams traded baskets back and forth and the Lady Rams were able to open up only a slim six-point lead. The Lady Tigers would capitalize on WSSU turnovers to cut into the Lady Rams' lead and tie the contest with only five minutes remaining in the game.

Just as in Friday night's contest, the Rams would put their opponent away during the final five minutes of the game. This time is would be WSSU forging ahead, not coming from behind, during the game's final 300 seconds as they used defense and free-throw shooting to seal their fifth straight win of the 2004-05 season. The Lady Rams would shoot an astronomical 92% from the charity stripe, hitting 23 of 25 attempts.

The Lady Rams would see four of their five starters turn in double-digit scoring performances as Shalonda Carter led all scorers and rebounders with 18 points and 12 rebounds in the game. She was joined in double figures by Latoya Armstrong who recorded 15 points, Kadina Baldwin who recorded 11 points and Nikki Eason who tallied 10 points and five assists.

The Lady Tigers were led by Marie Villa who recorded 12 points in a losing effort.

WSSU head coach John Williams, speaking by phone from Atlanta, GA had the following comment:
"We are pleased that were are getting the job done defensively, but we still need to take better care of the basketball. However, we are definitely happy to get the win, and I am happy for these ladies as they really are working hard."

With the win, the Lady Rams improve to 5-1 overall (0-0 CIAA) while Paine falls to 0-2. WSSU returns to action on Monday evening, November 29th, 2004 at 6:00 pm when they travel to Queens (N.C.) to take on the Lady Royals in a non-conference basketball tilt.
