Lady Hornets Slip By Lady Rams 67-51 In Women's Basketball Action

Nov. 29, 2006

Final Stats

WINSTON-SALEM, NC - Shalonda Carter tallied 21 points and seven rebounds but the Lady Hornets of Delaware State University snuck out of the C.E. Gaines Center in Winston-Salem, NC on Wednesday evening with a 67-51 victory over Winston-Salem State University in non-conference women's basketball action.

The Lady Rams led by four points at 14-10 with 13:09 to play in the first half as they looked to be in control of the tempo and momentum in front of a crowd of 1,811 fans at the C.E. Gaines Center.

Following the first media timeout of the half, the Lady Hornets immediately responded with a 24-5 run that spanned the next 9:18 seconds of play as Delaware State turned a four-point deficit into a 15-point lead, a lead that they would never surrender.

Delaware State increased their lead as time expired in the first half on a deep three-point field goal by Shaquana Morgan pushing the DSU cushion to 15 points, a margin that held up for the remainder of the contest.

Despite stellar defensive play in the second half, the Lady Rams cut the Hornets' lead to no less than 15 points for the remainder of the contest as DSU cruised to a 16-point victory to even their record at 2-2 on the season.

Leading the way for the Lady Rams was Shalonda Carter's game-high 21 points and seven rebounds. Carter missed only one shot on the evening turning in an eight-for-nine shooting performance from the field and chipping in with five points from the free throw line.  She added seven rebounds including three on the offensive glass to easily earn player of the game honors.  Lavontay Johnson joined Carter in double figures with 14 points in the loss.

Delaware State University was led by Raquel Collier's 16 points as she and three other Lady Hornets tallied double-digit scoring totals.

The loss drops WSSU to 1-6 on the season and snaps the Lady Rams' one-game win streak.

WSSU returns to action on Saturday, December 2, 2006 at 5:00 pm as they play host to the New Jersey Institute of Technology, another team that, like the Rams, are making the transition to Division I.
