PRINCESS ANNE, MD--Kadina Baldwin (Fayetteville, NC/Westover H.S.) forced overtime with a lay-up with only one second to play in regulation, but the Lady Rams were unable to sneak out of the Hytche Center with a win as UMES outscored WSSU 10-4 in overtime to hand the Lady Rams a 54-48 loss in women's basketball action on Saturday afternoon.

 

The Lady Rams battled back from an 11-point first half deficit to cut the lead down to two points with 3:33 left in regulation. On WSSU's next possession senior guard Kadina Baldwin hit the game-tying bucket with one second left to tie things up at 44 and force overtime.

 

Unfortunately for Ram fans the Lady Hawks went on to outscore WSSU 10-4 in the extra frame as UMES made 6-of-8 shots from the charity stripe to seal the win.

 


 

 

The Lady Rams (2-8) were led by Shalonda Carter (Fayetteville, NC/Westover H.S.) who tallied yet another double-double as she recorded 18 points and 17 rebounds.  Baldwin chipped in with 14 points in the contest including the three-pointer that forced overtime.

 

UMES (4-6) was led by Kristi Veltkamp (Hudsonville, Mich./Lansing Home School), who fell one-point shy of a triple-double and finished with a career-high 11 blocks, 10 rebounds and nine points. Jasmine Speed (Chesterfield, Mich./Anchor Bay H.S.) fell one-point shy of a double-double and added a team-high 12 points to go along with nine rebounds and a game-high five steals.

 

Winston-Salem State falls to 2-8 with the loss while UMES improves to 4-6 overall and have won their last four games.

 

The Lady Rams return to action on Thursday, December 14, 2006 at 7:00 pm when they face the Phoenix of Elon University in Elon, NC.
