Bulldogs Bite Back, Deafeat Lady Rams 78-53 To Split Season Series

Dec. 15, 2004

Final Stats

Wingate, NC - Maybe it was the 16-day layoff. Maybe it was the 32.9% shooting performance from the field. Or maybe the Bulldogs of Wingate University were looking to exact a little revenge on the Lady Rams for the loss they suffered in Winston-Salem, NC on November 23rd, 2004. Whatever the causes, it all boiled down to a 78-53 defeat for the Winston-Salem State University women's basketball team on the road in Wingate, NC on Wednesday evening.

The loss, one that snaps WSSU's six-game win streak, drops the Lady Rams to 6-2 overall (0-0 CIAA) on the season, and marks only the second time that the WSSU women's basketball team has failed to shoot over 40% from the field in a contest during the 2004-05 season.

The contest would go the Bulldogs' way from the very start as the home team opened the game with a 6-1 run and never looked back, building the cushion to as many as 15 points during the first 20 minutes of play.

Leading by ten points at 34-24 with 2:40 to play in the first half, the Lady Bulldogs used a pair of Lady Rams turnovers and a pair of free throws to increase their margin back to 12 points, and were the beneficiaries of a Kerri Metzger buzzer-beating three-pointer as time expired to balloon the margin back to 15 points as the half came to a close.

Wingate would start the second half the exact same way that they started the game as another 6-1 run would effectively put the game out of the reach of the Lady Rams.

The Bulldogs would lead by as many as 27 points in the game as the largest lead of the contest came with 11:06 to play in the game and the home team leading 60-33.

To the visiting Lady Rams' credit, WSSU would cut the deficit to only 15 points with 2:48 to play, but could never get close enough as Wingate improved to .500 on the season at 5-5 overall.

Leading the way for the Lady Rams in the loss was senior, guard, Nikki Eason who tallied 15 points and four rebounds in a losing effort. The Bulldogs were led by Tanetra Barrett who led four Wingate players in double figures with 17 points.

WSSU falls to 6-2 overall (0-0) with the loss, while the Bulldogs improve to 5-5 overall.

The Lady Rams return to action on Friday, December 15th, 2004 as they welcome Catawba College to the C.E. Gaines Center for a non-conference basketball match up. Tip-off is slated for 6:00 pm.
