Dec. 17, 2004
Winston-Salem, NC - The Lady Rams were able to earn their seventh win of the 2004-05 season and seventh win in nine games to move to 7-2 overall as they handed the visiting Lady Indians of Catawba College a 69-56 loss at the C.E. Gaines Center in Winston-Salem, NC in a non-conference basketball contest on Friday evening.
The first half of play was a closely contested affair as the two teams traded baskets back and forth and would be deadlocked at 16-16 with 8:01 remaining in first period.
WSSU would own the largest lead of the first half, a six-point margin, leading 24-18, 15:29 into the first half, and looked to be headed for a slim halftime lead.
However, the Lady Indians used an 8-2 run to close out the first 20 minutes of play, tying the contest at 26-26 in the process, as the two teams would head to the locker rooms for the halftime intermission dead even.
WSSU jumped out of the gates early in the second half as they used an 8-0 run over the span of two minutes and 58 seconds and never looked back as the game would never be tied again.
The Lady Rams would pull ahead by as many as 11 points during the half, leading 47-36 exactly half way through the second half when Tiffany Tonkins connected on a 15-footer.
The Lady Indians would never recover and WSSU would earn the 13-point win after several late-game free throws.
The Lady Rams would be the beneficiaries of four players in double figures as four starters registered double-digit scoring games, and the fifth WSSU starter (Shalonda Carter) registered nine points.
Tiffany Tonkins and Janet Robinson led the Lady Rams with 14 points each as Tonkins turned in one of the best games of her WSSU career, scoring 14 points while going a perfect 6 for 6 from the field and two-for-two from the line with all of her field goals coming from shots outside the paint. She also collected seven boards, six blocks (bringing her three-year total to 109), and two assists while committing no turnovers.
