BLACKSBURG, Va. - New Hampshire used solid shooting from both the field and the free throw line to steadily build a lead as large as 15 points on its way to a 63-55 victory over Winston-Salem State University Friday evening in the consolation game of the 17th-annual Virginia Tech University Lady Luck Classic.
The Wildcats (5-6) shot an even 50 percent for the game, and hit 8-of-9 shots from the charity stripe to bounce back from Thursday's 54-50 loss to Detroit. Although Winston-Salem State (4-12) caused five more turnovers than their counterparts and led in points off turnovers, New Hampshire held advantages in points in the paint (30-20), bench points (24-11) and rebounds (34-26).
The Lady Rams jumped out to an 11-4 lead to start the game, but New Hampshire countered with a 12-4 run of their own to take over, 16-15. A Richea Harris jumper briefly put Winston-Salem State back up, 17-16, but New Hampshire's Candace Williams answered right back with a three-pointer to give the Wildcats a lead that they would not relinquish.
New Hampshire gradually built the margin up to 15 points, 57-42, with 5:41 remaining in the second period. Winston-Salem State went on a 13-6 run to end the game and set the final score of 63-55.
Williams and Danielle Flowers each netted 13 points for the Wildcats, while Amy Simpson added 10. Whitney Edwards dished out a game-high six assists.
Shalonda Carter paced the Lady Rams with game-highs of 14 points and six rebounds in 38 minutes, and Kadina Davis chipped in 11 points.
The loss drops WSSU to 4-12 overall on the season. The Lady Rams return to action on December 31, 2006 in a New Year's Eve tilt versus USC-Aiken on Sunday at 2:00 pm at the C.E. Gaines Center.
