Lady Rams Move To 8-2 Overall With 54-47 Win Over Francis Marion

Dec. 30, 2004

Final Stats

Spartanburg, SC - The Winston-Salem State University Lady Rams were the recipients of their eighth victory of the 2004-05 season on Thursday afternoon as they earned a win over the Patriots of Francis Marion University by the score of 54-47 in the first round of the Allstate Insurance PBC/CIAA Classic from the campus of USC Upstate in Spartanburg, SC.

The Lady Rams jumped out to an early 4-0 lead only moments into the game following back-to-back baskets by Janet Robinson (Durham, NC) and Kadina Baldwin (Fayetteville, NC), and would never trail in the contest as the game would never again be tied with WSSU cruising in the first half of play.

Francis Marion fell behind 30-17 at halftime and could never recover, though the Patriots made a strong effort to try to steal the game back in the final moments as John Williams went to his bench early to rest key players for Friday's matchup with the host-team Lady Spartans of USC-Upstate.

Trailing by 15 points, 48-33, with 4:38 to play in the game, Francis Marion used a 10-1 run over the next 3:16 to cut the Lady Rams lead to 49-43 with 1:12 to go. The Patriots used tremendous pressure defense, extending the length of the floor, to create turnovers and quick shots by Winston-Salem State.

Following a Lady Ram timeout, Winston-Salem State regained its composure and extended the lead back to nine points, 52-43, on a free throw by Janet Robinson and a layup by Kadina Baldwin to seal the win and improve to 8-2 overall (0-0 CIAA).

Robinson led Winston-Salem State with 11 points and eight rebounds. Shalonda Carter had a double-double, her third double-double of the year, with 10 points and 15 rebounds, while Tiffany Tonkins added 10 points, seven boards and a pair of blocks.

Creshenda Singletary led Francis Marion in a losing effort with 13 points and four rebounds, while Danielle Moore and Jennifer Howard added 12 and 10 points, respectively for the Patriots.

With the win, the Lady Rams improve to 8-2 overall (0-0) CIAA and are the winners of their last two games and are winners of eight of their last nine contests. WSSU returns to action on Friday afternoon at 4:00 pm as they look to try to end the 2004 portion of their schedule with a win over the Lady Spartans of USC Upstate.
