Winston-Salem, NC - Winston-Salem State University basketball student-athletes Alleggrie Guinn and Shalonda Carter have been named the Crown Trophy-WSSU Student-Athletes of the Week for the week ending January 9th, 2005. Both Carter and Guinn are honored for their stellar play over the last seven days of basketball action.
Carter, a sophomore forward on the WSSU women's basketball team helped to lead the Lady Rams to a 1-1 record this past week. In two games this week, Carter led the Lady Rams to a 1-1 record as WSSU fell in defeat to Virginia Union at home and defeated ECSU on the road. She averaged 10.5 points and 10.5 rebounds on the week and is averaging a double-double for the season thus far in 2004-05. For her efforts, she has been named the Crown Trophy-WSSU Female Athlete of the Week.
Guinn, a junior guard on the men's basketball team was named the CIAA Men's Basketball Player of the Week for his efforts over the past week where he averaged 21.5 points, five rebounds, two steals and two assists as the Rams picked up wins over Virginia Union and ECSU this past week. In the Rams' 76-62 upset over #1 ranked Virginia Union, Guinn scored a game-high 25 points and added six rebounds, three assists and two steals as the Rams knocked off the previously undefeated Panthers. As well as being named the CIAA's Player of the Week, he has been named the Crown Trophy-WSSU Male Student Athlete of the Week as well.
Both Guinn and Carter are no strangers to weekly honors as both have been named the Crown Trophy-WSSU Student Athlete of the Week this season already.
