TALLAHASSEE, FL - The Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (2-17) will escape the oncoming snow by heading to Florida for the weekend, but the team won't be vacationing. Instead, they will be looking to pick up a road win when they take on the Florida A&M Lady Rattlers (10-7, 3-4 MEAC), Saturday evening. After four straight home losses, a road trip could be just what the Lady Rams need to get things going.
The Lady Rams will face a large challenge when they take on a Florida A&M team that has already won 11 games this season, including defeating Alabama and Florida earlier this season. The Lady Rattlers have shown a knack for scoring points this season as the team averages 58.5 points per game. The WSSU defense will need to click on all cylinders against the Lady Rattlers. Leading the WSSU defensive effort will be the junior tandem of forward Vontisha Woods and guard Rene Rector. The two are tied for the team lead with 24 steals each this season while sophomore center Elizabeth Maas leads the team with 10 blocks. Forcing 16.7 turnovers per game, the Lady Rams could hold an edge over a Florida A&M team that is turnover-prone at 20.2 turnovers per game.
While the WSSU opponents are prone to turning the ball over, they feature a potent offense, averaging just 58.5 points per game. The tandem of sophomore guards Tameka McKelton and Antonia Bennett. McKelton leads the team at 14.2 points per game while Bennett adds 11.3 points per game. The team features five players who average at least eight points per game.
The Lady Rams and Lady Rattlers are scheduled for a 5:30 p.m. tip off at the Multipurpose Teaching Gymnasium in Tallahassee, Florida. For more information on Lady Rams basketball, contact the WSSU Office of Athletic Media Relations at (336) 750-2909 or log on to www.WSSURams.com.
