WINSTON-SALEM, NC - The snow outside won't stop the action heating up the court when the Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (2-19) take on the Howard Lady Bison (10-10) in a rematch of two of the most exciting games of the last two seasons. In their last two meetings in Winston-Salem, N.C., the Lady Rams have won two games in the final seconds, including a 59-56 win at the buzzer last season and a 63-61 win in 2008.
Junior guard Rene Rector has been the hometown hero for the Lady Rams as she hit the game-winning shot in both contests. It was a lay-up with three seconds left that put the Lady Rams ahead 62-61. The Lady Rams would force a Howard turnover and hit another free throw to seal the win. Last season, Rector hit the game-winning three-pointer at the buzzer last season.
This season, Rector has been one of the Lady Rams' top scorers, averaging 9.8 points per game. Already the team's career leader in three-pointers made, Rector leads the team with 38 three-pointers made this season. She scored a season-high 24 points against Lipscomb at the 2009 Morehead State Invitational.
There will be no shortage of challenges for the Lady Rams who will take on a talented Howard team that is recently surging with four wins in their last five games, including a weekend sweep of Maryland-Eastern Shore and Delaware State. Leading the way for the Lady Bison will be junior guard Zykia Brown, who the second leading scorer in the MEAC at 18.4 points per game. Teaming with her is freshman forward Saadia Doyle, who is currently the conference's third leading scorer at 16.6 points per game and the conference's leading rebounder at 11.2 rebounds per game.
